Health and Safety policy
Removals Ruislip Health and Safety Policy
Removals Ruislip is committed to providing a professional, safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and storage services.
Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective controls. We comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice in the removals sector.
Policy Objectives
The key objectives of this Health and Safety Policy are to:
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the business. Prevent accidents, injuries and damage to property during removals, handling and transport. Ensure all staff are competent and appropriately trained for the tasks they undertake. Provide and maintain safe vehicles, equipment and systems of work. Minimise risks to clients, visitors and members of the public during our operations. Continuously review and improve our health and safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Removals Ruislip holds overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. Management will:
Ensure this policy is implemented, communicated and understood at all levels. Provide adequate resources, time and support to manage health and safety effectively. Set and review health and safety objectives and performance indicators. Ensure risk assessments and safe working procedures are in place and regularly reviewed. Investigate incidents and near misses to prevent recurrence. Lead by example and demonstrate visible commitment to safe working practices.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, including temporary and agency staff, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must:
Follow all safety instructions, training and company procedures. Use equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly. Report hazards, defects, near misses and incidents promptly to their supervisor. Cooperate with risk assessments, investigations and health surveillance where required. Refrain from any unsafe acts or omissions that could place themselves or others at risk. Inform management of any health condition that may affect their fitness for work or driving.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Removals Ruislip conducts suitable and sufficient risk assessments for all significant activities, including manual handling, working at height, loading and unloading, use of lifting equipment, vehicle movements and work at client premises.
From these assessments, we develop safe systems of work and method statements that consider factors such as access routes, parking and loading areas, stairways and lifts, fragile items, weather conditions and protection of client property. Staff are briefed on these procedures before work commences and are expected to follow them at all times.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of our removals work and a major focus of our safety arrangements. We:
Provide training in safe lifting and carrying techniques. Use appropriate handling aids such as sack trucks, dollies, moving straps and ramps. Plan lifts and team tasks to avoid overloading and awkward postures. Assess the weight, size and condition of items before moving them. Use additional lifting equipment where necessary for large or heavy objects.
All tools and equipment are maintained in good condition and inspected regularly. Any defective equipment is taken out of use immediately until repaired or replaced.
Vehicles and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in line with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence and be medically fit to drive.
We promote safe driving practices including adherence to speed limits, route planning, securing loads correctly, avoiding fatigue and complying with working time and driving regulations. Vehicles are checked before use, and any defects are reported and resolved promptly.
Client Premises and Public Safety
When working at client homes or business premises, we take all reasonable steps to protect occupants, visitors and the public. This includes:
Planning access routes to minimise obstruction and trip hazards. Using warning signs or barriers where necessary. Protecting floors, walls and fixtures from damage using appropriate covers. Controlling vehicle movements in residential streets and busy areas. Keeping work areas tidy and clearing waste and packing materials.
We respect client property at all times and aim to complete work efficiently while maintaining high safety standards.
Training, Information and Supervision
Removals Ruislip provides induction and ongoing training appropriate to each role. This may include manual handling, vehicle safety, equipment use, working at height, hazard awareness and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and team leaders ensure that staff are competent for the tasks they perform and receive appropriate instruction for each job. Refresher training is provided where needed, and new procedures are communicated clearly.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and hazardous conditions must be reported promptly. We maintain an accident record and investigate incidents to identify causes and implement corrective actions.
Emergency procedures are in place for situations such as fire, injury, road traffic incidents and damage to property. Staff are briefed on these procedures and must follow instructions from the person in charge at the scene.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We recognise the physical nature of removals work and take steps to protect the health and welfare of our employees. This includes providing rest breaks, drinking water, suitable workwear and personal protective equipment where required.
We do not tolerate working under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Any employee who is unfit for work must notify management immediately. Reasonable adjustments will be considered for staff with specific health needs, where compatible with safe service delivery.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, company operations or following significant incidents. We welcome feedback from employees and clients to help improve our safety standards.
By working together and following this policy, Removals Ruislip aims to ensure that every move is carried out safely, efficiently and with care for everyone involved.
